On Friday, March 9, 2012 I had my highly anticipated annual visit with the OB. I just wish I'd have felt better. Last week I had the flu, pneumonia, and an asthma flare up. Not a fun week.
It went pretty well. I finally got to have the baby talk with the doc! It was bittersweet. Mainly because a lot of the concerns we expected are indeed concerns. However, not that severe.
The asthma stuff is worrisome for a few reasons. One being that I am on a few medications that I cannot be on during my first trimester. The OB is referring me to another doctor in regards to that though, sometimes there are alternatives or sometimes your body can be well enough adjusted to a medicine that it might not be a factor - sounds weird, I know. Also, because of my pulse ox frequently dropping to the low 90s. I may have to have oxygen readily available to me and keep a pulse ox journal, etc. But, this doctor I'm getting referred to should clear up any haze on these issues. My doc said none of these are factors that should keep me from having a healthy pregnancy, but it's just a good thing that we're addressing them before I'm pregnant.
Which reminds me, he was so excited to get to have his pre-baby talk with someone. He told me, "I mean no disrespect to anyone. I love all of my patients. But, it is rare that I get to have a good, informed, educated conversation with someone who is planning and anticipating a pregnancy to the level that you are."
He said most times his clients are already pregnant, or he never knows when they start trying to conceive, or he gets a client in there that is frantic about having tried unsuccessfully for however long before they come in.
He showed slight concern with my pelvis. I'm going to get a copy of the x-ray for him to examine himself. He said worse comes to worse, we'll just have a planned c-section. I really don't want that though, so he told me that he didn't imagine it would be a problem. He said your hips and pelvis move a lot when your body is preparing to birth a child, he didn't seem to think a previous displacement of my pelvis would really affect that too much if it had already calciumed in place. Which, let's hope it has since that was like 4 years ago.
He was very excited that I'm a vegetarian now. He said there really are so many concerns with meats - which kind, how much, cooking, etc. He encouraged me to uphold that. Also, he told me my protein shakes were fine to drink and that I should in fact make sure that I'm drinking them consistently.
We talked about foods and beverages and all that. We discussed the whole process.
I told him that I would be using an ovulation kit and so he broke down... 'exposure' for me. Ha!
He was very impressed with some lab results I had done that included sugar levels, cholesterol, platelets, lipids, and a bunch of other stuff. He said all of my levels were fantastic!
He talked to me about exercise. I explained my weight loss journey to him. I had actually been worried about my pre-pregnancy weight. I just feel like I should lose a few more pounds. But, he told me that my weight was fine. He's not worried about it and I'm currently at a good pre-pregnancy weight. He's worried about my workouts though, in combination with the lung problems. He explained to me a lot of the same things I've already heard. Things about heart rate and pulse ox levels for when I workout. He said working out while pregnancy is a good thing, but on a very mild level and explained to me how to go about that.
And, since I'm only about 3 months away from trying he told me to go ahead and get some pre-natal vitamins and start taking them daily!
It was a very enlightening visit. It made the whole baby journey seem so much more real. I can't believe we're just 3 months away from trying! I'm so excited and nervous.
Also, I watched a bunch of "Baby Stories" this week and it made me really not want to do the whole 'birthing' part of pregnancy! Lol. Ah... I'm sure by the time I get to that point I won't care as much ;)
