I remember when we took Nolan to see the Cardiologist in St. Louis, thinking it was so amazing how they could tell the differences in his two different murmurs based on his heart rhythm alone. I think moms have this ability too - only with their child's cry.
It is amazing. I can tell when Nolan is hungry, needs changed, is tired, or is hurting based on his cry alone. Each of his cries spark some kind of mother instincts in me as I try and meet his needs and make him feel better or calm or happy.
He also has a very distinct cry for when he's mad. I've heard before that small infants can't throw actual tantrums. I promise they can.
My three month old little boy can throw a fit that would definitely get him in some trouble if he were older. I'm talking back arching, face reddening, arms flailing, face furrowing fit.
It's often sparked when you can't hold him and he's too impatient to be on his play mat or in his swing. The brow furrow starts it off, followed by an angry little scrunched up face and a few angry grunts. It quickly flows right into the bloodcurdling scream that turns my baby into the little red rage monster.
I don't really agree with cry-it-out methods, but it is ridiculous that he starts to calm as soon as I pick him up. I even manage to feel bad for him as it takes several minutes for his face to return to its normal peach shade. As soon as he's calm, I'll spend some time playing with him, before sneaking off again to start the whole thing all over. [sigh]
He also does this when: He first gets put in his carseat, you don't give him the pacifier fast enough, you aren't holding him the right way.
Today he threw one of those on Daddy's lunch. Cory looked at me and teased, "It's ridiculous that your attitude problem is genetic."
Bahaha... what attitude problem? ;)
