15 Month Wellness Check

This morning we had the 15 month wellness visit with the Pediatrician. It mostly went as expected.

Nolan weighed 19 pounds (8.1 percentile), was 29.75 inches tall (8.1 percentile), and had a head circumference of 46.5 cm (42.1 percentile - lol).

He only cried for a bit with this round of shots. It's still such a pitifully sad little cry. Poor baby.

As predicted, when we confronted the doc about our language concerns, she was not concerned. Especially because his gross/fine motor are really excellent. She said it is completely typical for boys to develop in gross/fine motor more quickly than they develop in verbal/intellect, and for girls to develop more quickly in verbal/intellect than they do gross/fine motor. She literally said that if he were a girl she might (maybe) have some slight amount of concern.

Although, she even retracted that after she found out that he knew three sign language words. That put his expressive language to 10 words.

She said if he is not at 20-30 words by 18 months that she might (again, with the 'might') have him evaluated by a speech pathologist.

Her focus was seemed geared towards actual social development, which makes me think she does not understand my concern.

I'm not worried about Nolan's overall development or functioning. His social/emotional and physical development are spot on. His receptive language skills are awesome for his age. He points, he follows simple commands, he can correctly pick out shapes (and some colors) per request, he points to things in books when you ask him to, etc.

My concern is not that he doesn't understand language, my concern is I feel that due to the amount of language he does understand perhaps something is hindering his ability express language. Whether it being his hearing, or the way we present requests to him, or straight up stubbornness/laziness (he is a boy after all - ah, burn).

To me, it seems silly to wait another three months if there is in fact a hinderance that can easily be corrected.

And that's my parenting ramble for the day. Here's to waiting it out (and so goes life...).
