20 Month Old

Twenty months old and getting more unbelievably 'big kid' every day!

Nolan's quite sociable these days. He gives away real big smiles and perky hellos, not to mention his charming mannerism.

My favorite thing is when he says "Hi, Seedy!" or "Bye, Seedy!" We saw an older gentleman at the park recently walking a dog. After Nolan had screamed for the dog the man stopped and let Nolan pet him a few times. When the man was on his way he bent a bit toward Nolan and said, "Bye, little sir."

Nolan smiled hugely and said, "Bye, Seedy."

In case it isn't clear seedy = sweetie.

He is having another language explosion. He's becoming somewhat of a parrot, too. It's not at all uncommon for him to, at random, just pick out a word you've said and start repeating it. It's so cute. And dangerous - ha!

Fun, too, because now he is at least understandable by other people. Aunt Ashley doesn't have problems picking out his words at all. And thanks to Uncle Casey I'm pretty sure Nolan thinks thin cardboard strips are an object called, "Hi-yah." Because, ya know, sword play.

He's still incredibly well behaved. But, just in the last week alone, when he gets huffy about something not going his way he'll swing his little arms dramatically downward. This, of course, turned into him trying to take a swipe at me or Cory.

I should probably ignore it more than anything, because I'm starting to feel like the way we are handling it is giving it too much attention. I usually grab his hands and make a point to tell him that these are his hands and that he cannot swing them at me when he's mad. I also tell him that he can clap his hands instead, or fold them together, if he feels like he needs to do something with them. And a few times he actually has clapped his hands instead of swinging them at me.

He also earned himself his first time-outs as a result of said behavior.

Oof. I am on the line about this one though, and how I personally want to handle it if it sticks around much longer.

But, these are minimal. Just something new. Overwhelmingly, he listens to us quite well.

He knows almost all of the letters now! You guysss... he's 20 months old and knows almost the whole alphabet. Sorry, I don't go all braggy mom much, but in this area, I am! He still won't consistently recognize D, J, Q, V, and Y. But, he has the rest down - and in no particular order. We haven't taught him them in song format or in order.

He's also actually saying the names of shapes more, instead of just picking them out when asked. He'll say: circle, square, and octagon pretty regularly. We get efforts at triangle, too. But not often.

He says the numbers: one, two, three, five, and six.

He says the colors: yellow, blue, purple, black, green, red, and orange.

He's running much better these days, but in general is still a pretty clumsy kid. He's trying very hard to figure out how to jump. For now, I'm pretty sure he thinks it's a magic trick.

He got much better using a spoon this past month - he mastered the fork a bit ago. Still having a lot of trouble with it, and he gets frustrated with it easily, but he manages to eat his bowls of applesauce or yogurt on his own now - except for the last few bites.

He'll ask for water now! I love it. He's only ever gotten milk, water, and pedialyte. But, when it's between meals if I've forgotten to sit out his water cup, he'll run to the refrigerator while screaming, "Wah-wah."

He'll also ask for apples and blueberries on a regular basis. I think it's cool that when he spontaneously thinks of food to ask for it's always something good for him.

He likes to "help" do things. When I'm folding a blanket, putting away dishes, or carrying in groceries he's there to help. With groceries he's even started saying (what sounds like, anyway), "I got it!"

Speaking of help, he asks for help now, too. It's so cute, and has really smothered out some fits before they could start.

Another funny word he says now is "tuck" (stuck). When he's standing at a baby gate, sometimes his foot gets wedged between two bars at the bottom of it. The first few times this happened I'd rush to him, thinking he'd hurt himself because of the theatrical tears. Each time I told him, "Oh no! Your foot got stuck."

So now, anytime he is stuck or something is stuck that he's trying to get he'll shout, "tuck!"

He asks for piggy back rides. Daddy's piggy back rides are funner and faster (and scarier), so he prefers them. He'll pull at daddy while already trying to climb on and be saying, "buck ry." Because that's "back ride" in Nolan.

He's finally cutting his molars! Ha. Those should sure be some healthy teeth as long as they stayed in there. It's pitiful though. His little gums are so swollen. I got him some all natural strawberry popsicles, and he seemed to really enjoy that. The last few days it's been hard for him to eat anything hard without literally crying :(

His little feet are finally long enough in the carseat that they hit the back seat, but he's gotta another four months before turning around. So... guess he'll prop them up or criss-cross. He doesn't seem to mind it, and they're not so long that it looks awkward or uncomfortable (aka, he has not met the maximum height of rear facing for his carseat). I'm mainly just noting it because it means he probably had another growth spurt this month ;)

He is starting to look like such a... big kid. It just doesn't seem right. When I think that just 20 months ago at this moment, I was laying in that bed, not even having birthed him yet, it seems like he should still just be a tiny baby. But, 20 months in parent land feels much shorter than it did to me in non-parent land. Ha!

Here's the big boy now:

Seriously though, doesn't he look like he's modeling here? lol

We went to a fun little kid's museum.

He had a lot of fun with the other kids in the rocket!

Wearin' it proud, even though they played sloppily.

He can be a very picky eater, but a little yogurt, peanut butter, and banana go a long way in hiding some greens :)

Blurry, but we're still cute ;)

Sometimes he crawls in my lap and then crosses his feet however mine are, it's cute.

He loves opening and closing the door. Over and over and over...

Found a merry-go-round.
