Birthday Letter (3)

*Blogger is about to get hit up with a few posts that were written months ago and never shared 😳*

Nolan,

You're three now. Three years ago, I welcomed a dark haired, goo covered, screaming little boy into this world. And, like any parent would say, it changed me forever. Three years later and I'm still finding new ways it changes me every day.

There's something about you that draws people in - you're infectious. Everyone who knows you talks about those slightly squinty (yet somehow large) eyes of yours. You communicate so much through them and I'm mystified by the arrays of light brown, hazel, and green that color them. I'm still wondering if they'll ever become just one color. (and perhaps secretly hoping that they don't)

You're funny. So funny. I love how silly you are. I love getting to play with you and observe how much you've grown. Your imagination grows more everyday, and some of the very best parts of my day are catching imaginary rabbits with you, jumping from imaginary rocks, throwing imaginary balls, finding imaginary dogs. Better yet, pretending that we are puppies or kittens, pretending that those boxes are our cars and those plates are the steering wheels, pretending that it's raining just so you can open the umbrella.

You're obsessed with Paw Patrol, Son. We have all the little dolls action figures. We spend a good deal of time saving Mayor Goodway and Chickaletta. And quoting Ryder's famous, "No job is too big, no pup is too small."

As you grow, so does your sense of autonomy. You're so stubborn, Kid. Sometimes I have to approach you from an angle instead of straight on (metaphorically), to dodge the irrational tantrumming of a toddler. I hope to show you calmness and respect, while also showing you that there are rules that you do have to follow. You're learning. You learn more everyday. There are plenty of areas in life that call for stubbornness, and we'll shape that characteristic into something productive, I promise.

If there's one lesson I know I'll preach throughout your whole life, it'll be: Sometimes you have to do things you don't want to do.

That's life. And it's ok.

Happy Birthday, Bug.

I love you so much!
Mama
