Ah. Ya know what they say: the days are long, but the years are short. Has a truer sentence ever been uttered?
This year has begun in chaos. I've been doing a lot of house projects. At this very moment my
I feel as though my poor child has been terribly neglected these past few weeks. But, he's seven now, so, you might be surprised at how independent he's become.
Like. On Saturday mornings, he just gets up and does his own thing now. Sometimes he makes his own cereal or we leave out some other obvious breakfast for him to make on his own. He'll build LEGOs or play Minecraft or draw pictures. When it first started happening me and Cory had this moment of: when is the last time we slept in? So, it's kind of magical. It's also a tiny bit sad. It's like the very, very beginning of him actually not needing me anymore, right? (I'm not crying, you're crying. Shut up.)
He's so much like a little person now. Oh, and how we've had some sassy moments start popping up.
One that springs to mind: We were having a serious conversation at dinner about something. It was of the nature of don't-do-that or do-that. One or the other. And he abruptly picks up his plate, starts walking to the sink and tells me, "I'm just done talking about it."
It was one of those moments that I had to pause for a second - because, really, I was trying not to laugh. Oh... that kid...
Most of the characteristics I've noted over the past several years are still there. He's incredibly sweet to his mama - and definitely a mama's boy! He's very funny. He likes to listen to and tell jokes now. And he got a joke book for Christmas, so he's really full of it these days.
Cory and I often prank (more like try to scare) each other, so now Nolan plays along. I've seen him legitimately scare Cory a few times, and he's definitely gotten me a few times too. What have we created?
He still struggles with anxiety and is a sensitive little boy. He's aware of it. We've labeled it and we talk about it. He has coping mechanisms now, but often needs some encouraging. We definitely have a problem with him getting walked on by peers from time to time. We're working on that, too. Very recently - and perhaps for the first time ever - he's been in a situation where he really had to stand up for himself. I'm pleased to report - after a fair amount of coaching - that he did do it. I hope he keeps doing it without needing adult intervention. And I hope he's able to find balance in all of it as well.
Yearly cardiologist appointment showed Nolan's aortic blockage is in the high end of normal now, he's pretty much always in tachycardia, and he's recently been running a low blood pressure. Though all of this is stressful for my mama heart, we're still just given a list of things to keep watch for. Still running with the assumption that he won't need a surgical correction until his late teens or twenties.
Summer is definitely his favorite time of year. Kid's part fish. It goes into our daily routine to go to the pool in the mornings. That's part of why I hate when summer ends. We get into these new routines and we get so much bonding time together... I hate when he leaves me to start back up with school.
He got a skate board for Christmas. Ate it the very first ride and then didn't want anything to do with it again. Ha! Baby steps, I suppose.
He earned that gold belt in karate! He was so proud.
He started a Little Ninjas class, and I've noticed so much improvement in his body awareness and climbing and dare-devilish type things. So, that's fun.
Wish it had come in handy a few weeks ago when he tripped walking up stairs. He busted his lip open and we spent the night at the children's hospital. We met with several doctors and had to have a plastics consult. The way his lip busted allowed for a bulge of tissue and nerve to be exposed. It was gross. It was so swollen for days. He couldn't hardly eat or talk. Forever my clumsy genes.
We visited a beach near Panama City Beach last summer and Nolan got to do all kinds of snorkeling! People were very impressed that he could snorkel. He practiced in the pool all summer. So, he was basically a pro by the time vacation rolled around.
He also got to visit San Francisco for the first time since we moved from there. It was a little bizarre how much he remembered from there and places he asked to visit. We call him an elephant, because it seems as though he never forgets anything.
Alright, that's all for now.
As always, pictures!!

Happy Birthday, Bug. Love you most!
